‘…the limit to the size of the blocks that can be extracted in Aurisina is determined solely by the strength of the lifting equipment; to give a dramatic example, if ultra-powerful cranes were available and if this were of any use, it would be possible to extract a monolithic house, including the foundations and roof.’
(Ambrosi C. – Sonzogno G., ‘La Cava Romana – Marmi e pietre del Carso e dell’Istria’, Trieste, 1962, pp. 13-14)
Beginning in the 1st century BC during the Roman Empire and flourishing during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the extraction of Aurisina marble has its roots in over two thousand years of history, continuing to the present day. In contemporary times, the materials extracted from our quarries in Aurisina become increasingly appreciated in Italy, Europe and around the world, finding application in residential, commercial and public projects at an international level.
Today, there are two quarries where Aurisina marble is extracted: on the one hand, “basin 1”, producing the selections characterised by a presence of larger fossils such as Aurisina Fioritello, Aurisina Fiorita and Aurisina Lumachella. On the other hand, the “basin 2”, also known as “Cava Romana”, where we extract the finer-grained variants such as Aurisina Granitello.
