An Amalgam Loop

Milan, Italy

A block of limestone lies in a tank of vinegar. A sound invades the space, evolves, and accompanies the slow fall of dust on the scene.

The chemical reaction between limestone and vinegar triggers a metamorphosis: calcium atoms, released from the rock, crystallise on the surrounding surfaces. This transformation, imperceptible to the eye, is decoded and used to control a generative music system. The vibrations controlled by this ionic mutation are fed back into the system, keeping the reaction alive and causing it to evolve to the point where the transformation itself leads the installation to its natural extinction.

The work challenges the distinction between living and inert: the inorganic becomes an agent capable of influencing itself and the environment through a feedback cycle, until its own extinction.

Inspired by the geology of the Dolomites, An Amalgam Loop reveals the continuity between the organic and inorganic worlds, transforming itself into an empathetic device that explores the boundaries of our identity.
