Broken Paths

Verona, Italy

During the Italian Stone Theatre 2019, the design exhibition held in Pavilion 1 of Marmomac in Verona, our marble was used in the realisation of ‘Interrupted Paths’, designed by award-winning architect Vincenzo Latina, an installation that is part of the ‘Hortus Lithicus’ exhibition section. The work is conceived as an abstract and essential two-part enclosure. One section is made of Aurisina Lumachella marble. The remaining area is ‘wrapped’ in Nero Africa granite panels, which accentuate the depth of the backdrop, on which a full-wall mirror is placed.

On the ground, in the water basin, tall steel stems and remains of Aurisina marble give the installation a sense of abstract nature. This device structures reflections and mirror images that expand the space disproportionately, creating an illusory effect of the partial dissolution of the enclosure into a stone forest. The impression is that of entering a “holz”, an ancient German word for forest. In the forest (“holz”) there are paths (“wege”) which, often covered with grass, suddenly break off into the thicket, becoming increasingly lost until they disappear completely.
